Overview
On December 17, 1967, Australian Prime Minister Harold Holt disappeared while swimming in rough surf at Cheviot Beach, near Portsea, Victoria. Despite one of the largest search operations in Australian history, his body was never recovered.
The "Submarine Abduction" Theory
One of the most persistent—and sensational—theories suggests that Holt was a lifelong spy for the People's Republic of China. Proponents of this theory, popularized by British novelist Anthony Grey, argue that Holt was picked up by a Chinese submarine waiting just offshore to "defect" to Beijing.
Other Speculations
- CIA Involvement: Some allege the CIA orchestrated his disappearance because Holt intended to withdraw Australian troops from the Vietnam War.
- Faked Death: Others believe Holt faked his own death to start a new life with a mistress, though no evidence has ever emerged to support this.
Official Finding
A 2005 coronial inquiry officially concluded that Holt simply drowned in the dangerous surf conditions, noting that he was a frequent but occasionally "reckless" swimmer who may have underestimated the strong rip currents.
