Overview
Project STARGATE was the umbrella code name for a secret U.S. Army unit established in 1978 at Fort Meade, Maryland, by the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) and SRI International. The program investigated the operational use of remote viewingβthe ability to psychically "see" events, sites, or information from a great distance.
Operations
The program employed "psychic spies" who were tasked with locating kidnapped individuals, finding downed aircraft in foreign territories, and observing Soviet military installations. Notable participants like Joe McMoneagle were highly decorated for their service within the unit.
Declassification
The CIA declassified the program in 1995 after an external review concluded that while some "hits" were statistically significant, the information was too inconsistent and vague to be useful for intelligence operations.
