  This theory claimed that refined industrial sugar was not merely nutritionally dubious but chemically manipulated to make consumers weaker, more compliant, or more docile. It grew from the broader late nineteenth-century crisis of food adulteration, the rise of the American Sugar Refining Company, and deep suspicion of industrial processing.
